We offer a 10 hours day private tour to Meteora from Thessaloniki with an English speaking guide. We suggest departing from Thessaloniki at 8:00 am and we will arrive at Meteora after a 2 hours trip. During our visit there we can visit two monasteries and admire the breathtaking geological formations.
Meteora is a complex of enormous dark-colored sandstone rocks rising above Kalambaka, near the first ridges of the Pindos Mountains and the Hasia Mountains. The Meteora monasteries, built on top of some of the rock pillars, are nowadays the second most important monastery complex in Greece, next to Agion Oros (Mount Athos). Only seven out of the thirty original historic monasteries are still active currently; since 1988, those monasteries have been included in the UNESCO list of World Heritage Monuments.
The formation of the geological landscape has not been clearly interpreted yet, despite the fact that it has been studied from times to times by both Greek and foreigner geologists. The fact that neither the Greek mythology and ancient Greeks nor foreigner historians ever referred to this location is outstanding. This wild and inaccessible landscape represented suitable conditions for Christian ascetics who settled in this area around a date that is not precisely known. In the 14th century, Saint Athanasios the Meteorist forms the first structured monastic community under certain regulations; he organized it according to the ritual of organized monasteries of Agion Oros. The name “Meteora” comes from Saint Athanasios the Meteorist of the Great Meteoron Monastery.
